It’s that all too familiar feeling. You’re running down the field and you make a quick turn to which your ankle gives out underneath you. Ankle sprains are one of the most common soccer injuries accounting for up to 29% of all soccer specific injuries. A sprain occurs when the ligaments of a joint are stretched beyond their normal capacity. Most ankle sprains occur to the ligaments along the outside of the ankle when the foot rolls inward.
The good news is that most ankle sprains are mild and with swift and proper treatment, returning to play can be sped by days or even weeks. “Swift” means that treatment should begin as soon as an injury has been recognized, the goal of which is to reduce swelling. Swelling, also known a inflammation, is a necessary part of the healing process, however, the body often exaggerates this response. This is of concern as excessive swelling can lead to pain, reduced range of motion and decreased strength, all of which can lead to loss of agility and function.
The first line of defense against swelling is compression. The second is through local cooling which traditionally has been achieved through icing but this has been found to cause tissue damage with prolonged exposure.
